Why take guitar lessons?
Learning to play the guitar develops a varitey of skills, qualities and abilities in the student. These are essential for a variety of purposes in life such as discipline, respect, increased memory, concentration, confidence, self-esteem, appreciation for fine arts, personal growth, artistic development and much more. Children learn a valuable skill which can assist them with their emotional and intellectual development, plus it gives them increased confidence in their own abilities. Teenagers learn to communicate better through their music, and often form friendships with other student who learn music at school. Bands are often formed and students may choose to play at assemblies, competitions, talent quests, concerts and other special events. Adults also experience benefits such as improved memory, fine motor skills development and also gain a healthy outlet for stress from everyday life.
What will I learn in my guitar lessons?
Your lessons will generally develop 3 things: Technique, repertoire and musicianship. First, technique involves your basic musical theory such as learning to read sheet music, notes, chords and melodies. Second, repertoire means learning and adding new songs to your musical program. You will start with simple songs, then move onto more advanced songs as you progress. Your teacher will even let you choose your own songs once you reach a basic level. Finally, musicianship will teach you skills such as improvising, composing, listening and playing with others; all in a fun and stress free environment. Each lesson is tailored to suit each unique student in order to maximise learning.
Are lessons in groups or private?
For the benefit and convenience of our students, we choose to dedicate 100% of our time and energy towards your musical education. This is why lessons are run on a private one to one basis instead of a group setting. Whilst group lessons may be a little easier at first, they do split the attention of the teacher into multiple students, who are all learning at different levels. So if you are falling behind or excelling, you may find yourself being left out and bored within a group setting. Our teachers dedicate their full attention to one student at a time, much like a doctor does with his patients, so that that they may get the most out of each and every lesson. You will find that students who learn with a private instructor will always learn faster and more effectively than those within a group. So come in and experience our difference today.

Do I have to buy a new guitar?
The short answer is no. Guitar lessons start with learning basic technique, notes values and rhythms. Whilst the best scenario is to have a beautiful new guitar at home, you can start with a second hand one. Typically for children, a half size guitar is the most appropriate with low action to make it easier for those little fingers. Student 8 years and older may find a ¾ size guitar more comfortable. An acoustic nylon string guitar is always best for beginners as it allows them to learn the basics without too much difficulty or pain. Steel string guitars should be left for when the student is a little more advanced and can play chords fluently. We recommend purchasing a Valencia or Yamaha within the $100-$300 range as they will provide you with a basic quality of sound and plenty of durability. The next step from here is buying an electric guitar, either Cort or Squier which will cost anywhere between $300-$800 depending on the make and model. Ensuring that your guitar has quality pickups, solid neck, and decent electrical components makes all the difference in your purchase. When you are in the market for something towards the professional grade, we recommend looking at a quality second hand guitar instead of a cheap no name brand. Fenders are always a strong brand, along with Ibanez, and these can cost upwards of $2000 depending on the specific model. More important than the price of your guitar is the quality of your teacher. Even a gold plated luxury guitar will not play itself, and the best investment by far is not in the instrument but in yourself. That is a key difference at Contreras Music, we search for the best quality teachers so that you get the best results. Speak to one of our teachers today to get advice about your individual guitar needs.
How long does it take to learn to play a song?
You will be playing music in the very first lesson. That’s right, the first lesson. We are so confident in our pedagogy and quality teaching that we teach students of all ages and abilities how to play their first song within the first 30 minutes. You will learn how to play the melody of an easy piece or perhaps even the start to a famous riff. After your first lesson, it only gets better. You will learn how to read music and thus be able to learn pieces on your own, without the need for someone to supervise you. You will also learn to play chords and develop your aural skills so that you can start learning new songs by ear. With a dedicated practice routine, you can expect to start playing easy chords within the first few months, and more advanced pieces after your first year. Pop songs and some rock pieces can be learnt in as little as a few weeks, it just depends on your level of practice and commitment to the instrument.
How often do I need to practice the guitar and for how long?
Your eventual aim will be to practice daily just because you enjoy it. Until then, a healthy start is 10-20 minutes a day 3 times per week for children, 30-40 minutes a day 4 times per week for teenagers, and anything above that for adults. Whilst this may seem like a lot, think about the time available in your normal week. You have 60 minutes per every hour, 24 hours in every day, and 7 days in every week. This means you have a total of 168 hours each week, or 10,080 minutes at your disposal, and guitar practice will only require 1 hour or 60 of those minutes per week. The key is consistency and determination, as you will always get better and learn new things when practicing guitar on a regular basis.
What type of music do you teach?
Just like our founder, we are eclectic when it comes to musical taste. We enjoy teaching our students the music they love and listen to on a daily basis. Simply tell your teacher which genre you prefer and they will be more than happy to customise your lessons to suit your interests.
Do you only teach the guitar?
NO way! Our eclectic tastes have driven us to search for expert teachers in a variety of different disciplines and instruments. We currently also teach keyboard, piano, vocals, bass guitar, theory, composition and drum kit. Book in a free trial lesson and experience our difference for yourself.
