How often do I need to practice the piano and for how long?
Your eventual aim will be to practice daily just because you love and enjoy it. Until then, a healthy start is 10-20 minutes a day 3 times per week for children, 30-40 minutes a day 4 times per week for teenagers, and anything above that for adults. Whilst this may seem like a lot, think about the time available in your normal week. You have 60 minutes per every hour, 24 hours in every day, and 7 days in every week. This means you have a total of 168 hours each and every week, or 10,080 minutes at your disposal… and piano practice will only require 1 hour or 60 of those minutes per week. Not much right?! The key is consistency and determination, as you will always get better and learn new things when practicing music!
When is the right time to learn?
The perfect time to learn is always right now! Putting lesson off or waiting for a better time is never the right answer as life will always get in the way. Taking the initiative and booking in your first trial music lesson is an important step, and one that you will never regret. You see, it all depends on the student’s individual age, ability, maturity and talent for music. Children as young as 3 have come in and experienced a wonderful music lesson with an experienced teacher at Contreras Music. Primary school student and teenagers have learnt new skills which helped them develop confidence at school and social skills essential for healthy relationships. Adults of all ages have also seen many benefits from their lessons such as improved memory, heightened focus and personal growth. Our oldest adult students have been in their 70’s, and they found lessons to be enjoyable and meaningful. Adults, teenagers, and children of all ages and abilities have experienced many benefits from starting their musical journey with us. So don’t put it off any longer, become a happy and talented music student today. All ages, backgrounds and levels welcome!
Do I need to buy a new piano?
No you don’t. Piano lessons start with learning the basics of technique, notes and rhythm. Whilst the best scenario is to have a piano at home, you can start with just a keyboard. Typically for beginners, a small 3-4 octave keyboard is enough. We recommend purchasing a Yamaha, Roland or Casio keyboard within the $100-$400 range as it will provide you with both quality and durability. The next step from here is buying a digital piano which will cost anywhere between $600-$2000 depending on the make and model. Having many sounds is not so important as long as the piano has weighted keys, hammer action and the full 6-7 octave range. When you are in the market for a piano, we recommend looking at a quality second hand piano instead of a cheap new one. Yamaha are always a strong brand, along with Kawai, however Steinway is your best bet if money isn’t an issue. The most important aspect is having a great teacher who nurtures you and fosters a love for your instrument. That is our key difference at Contreras Music. Speak to one of our teachers today to get advice for your individual needs.

What will I learn in my piano lessons?
At a Contreras Music lesson you will essentially develop 3 things: Technique, repertoire and musicianship. Firstly, technique involves your basic musical theory such as learning to read sheet music, notes, chords and melodies. You will then learn how to apply these to scales, arpeggios and other exercises designed to develop your fine motor skills. Secondly, repertoire means developing your musical menu by adding new songs to your program. You will start with simple songs, then move onto more advanced songs as you progress. Your teacher will even let you choose your own songs once you reach a basic level. Finally, musicianship will teach you skills such as improvising, composing, listening and playing with others; all in a fun and stress free environment.
Are lessons in groups or private?
For the convenience and benefit of our students, we choose to dedicate our entire time and energy towards your musical education. This is why lessons are run on a private one to one basis instead of a group setting. You see, whilst group lessons may be a little easier at first, they do split the attention of the teacher into 5 or sometimes 10 different students, all learning at different levels. Hence if you excel or are falling behind you may find yourself being left out or bored within a group scenario. Our teachers dedicate their entire attention to one student at a time, much like a doctor does with his patients, in order that they may get the most out of each session. You will find that students who learn with a private instructor will always learn faster and more effectively than those within a group. You will also find that lessons, repertoire and levels are tailored to suit the individual student when in a private setting.
